Chris Hayton, Principal at Rothelowman Architects

Principal at Rothelowman, a leading design studio that undertakes radical exploration to create bold and inspiring places for people and cities.

Passionate about the sustainable evolution of cities, their buildings, infrastructure and demographics, I am a part time teacher, ideas enthusiast and positive thinker. I am inspired by the power collective thinking brings to the process of turning concepts into reality.

As designers our ability to think laterally makes us uniquely skilled at unlocking complex puzzles. This positions us perfectly to successfully mediate the agendas of planners, politicians and those developing our cities.

Since first working in an architectural practice as a student, and now in my role as a practice Principal leading the national team in master planning and urban design, I have constantly sought progressive ways to drive positive change in the built environment. Much of my time is spent assisting clients and staff to realise the unseen opportunities in our projects.

Experts predict Australia’s population to double in the next 50 years, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics forecasting our population to increase to 42 million people by 2056.

Australia’s infrastructure needs to keep pace with this expected population boom. The Federal and State governments are looking to encourage and fund new initiatives aimed at anticipating this population growth by making our cities smarter, curbing congestion in urban population centres, increasing our national supply chain capacity and enhancing connectivity.
